Iran will soon conduct exercises with its Saudi Arabian allies in an attempt to boost the defense cooperation, state media said on Monday.

“We are preparing for drills in a military formation and also for military exercises in the vicinity of Riyadh in an effort to increase the defense ties between our countries and strengthen the military cooperation,” the semi-official ISNA news agency quoted Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan as saying.

The drills will take place on the border between Iran and Saudi Arabia, where Iran is engaged in a dispute with Riyadh over a dispute over the control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran, a staunch ally of Saudi Arabia and a major trading partner for the two countries, has long insisted that the Strait is the only one that it should control.
